Small Projects and Furniture

This page is a collection of small projects that I have worked on personally and professionally. These are some of my favorite projects because they allow me to take a more significant role in the design process and be much more detail oriented.

Rolling Loft Ladder

This is a movable staircase used to access a loft space in a home. It can be pushed forward and stowed away when the grandkids aren’t home. This is an exciting exploration into moving architectural elements and required an understanding of mechanical parts and Autodesk Inventor.

Roles:

  • Primary designer

  • Detailer

Dining Room Table

This was a personal furniture piece. It needed to be lightweight, sturdy, attractive, and made out of salvaged material including rough sawn Douglas fir, a 4x8 sheet of walnut plywood and a 30x60 piece of tempered glass. The best part of this project was turning the legs out of the Douglas fir. The worst part of this project was the nights of iron on edge banding on curved surfaces.

Roles:

  • Designer

  • Fabricator

Louver Wall

A sun-shading device designed to mechanically rotate in synchrony. This project is just beginning construction and will be a test of MFGR’s ability to machine precision aluminum parts on the Laguna Smartshop II. This project was designed in Rhino 7 Grasshopper and Autodesk inventor.

Roles:

  • Designer

  • Renderer

  • Detailer

Big Sky Sign

This is a 27-foot-long aluminum sign that was transported to the top of the main lift at the Big Sky Ski Resort. It was designed to be carried around with a snowcat and had to be sturdy enough to withstand very high winds and tourists. The letters were machined out of aluminum plate and seam welded. This was MFGR’s first attempt at aluminum machining on our new Laguna router and it required extensive R&D.

Roles:

  • Designer

  • Detailer

  • CNC work
